South America has a lot of beautiful countries and some amazing wildlife. In the mountains, there are many great places to visit for those looking for extreme sports, as well as some spots along the coast which have their charms. The continent is home to some of the largest cities in the world including Mexico City, São Paulo, Buenos Aires, and Rio de Janeiro. This continent is also home to the world’s largest rainforest, Amazonas.

South America has some of the most beautiful landscapes on Earth. It’s no wonder that South American countries are among the top destinations for tourism! Visiting this part of the world will provide you with a wide variety of things to do and see. As a result of its sheer size and population, there is something for everyone here.

Brazil – South America’s Largest Country

Brazil is one of the best places to visit in South America. With a land area that is equivalent to the 48 contiguous United States, Brazil has a little bit of everything. The Amazon rainforest, which is 10% of all rainforests on Earth combined, covers most of the land. The country is also home to the world’s largest waterfall, Iguazu falls; and one of its most beautiful cities, Rio de Janeiro.

Brazil has an amazing variety of things to do and see. If you enjoy nature activities, go scuba diving in the Amazonia or hiking up Corcovado mountain for an amazing view of Rio de Janeiro. If you like historical sites, visit the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio or travel to Minas Gerais to see the old colonial towns and visit “The Lady of Gold,” a church that was built entirely out of gold.

If you want nightlife and beaches, you won’t be disappointed either. With almost 900 kilometers of coastline, you can find an island or beach town to suit your needs. The country is also full of spectacular natural parks and many are only accessible by boat. I have even heard rumors of people visiting all these locations in just 18 hours!

Peru – South America’s Second Largest Country

With a land area of 1,285,216 sq. miles, Peru is the second-largest country and also one of the best places to visit in South America. It has a fantastic central desert with interesting oasis towns to visit around Titicaca Lake and Arequipa. There is no doubt that this country is home to some incredible landscapes including the Amazon rainforest and its highest peak, Huascarán (6,768 m/22,205 ft). Peru is also home to many historical sites including the Nazca Lines and Machu Picchu.

As well as having great places to visit in its own right, Peru is an excellent place to start your South American trip. It is one of the few countries where you can take a train from the coast to the highlands and then into the Amazon rainforest. This is a place that you must visit if you enjoy history or nature.

Ecuador – South America’s Third Largest Country

With a land area of 109,484 sq. miles, Ecuador is the third-largest country in South America after Brazil and Peru. It has many different things to offer including the Galapagos Islands, the Andes Mountains, volcanoes, hot springs, and more.

The Galapagos are a group of volcanic islands which are very isolated from the rest of the world. Because it is so far off the beaten path, this archipelago offers travelers a unique opportunity to experience a variety of wildlife up close. The waters around the islands are teeming with life – from sea turtles to hammerhead sharks – and offer divers a wild adventure.

The Andes mountains offer travelers a unique opportunity to see snow-capped volcanoes, alpine lakes, tropical rainforests, waterfalls, and more all in one day! You can even see the Amazon and Cotopaxi, which is one of the world’s highest volcanoes.

Ecuador is one of the best places to visit in South America and you could do exciting things here including: exploring waterfalls, kayaking through rainforest rivers, hiking volcanoes, and coming face-to-face with many different types of wildlife. If you like extreme sports, then parasailing on the beach or trying some kiteboarding would be a great way to spend an afternoon.

Chile – South America’s Fourth-Largest Country

With a land area of 276,812 sq. miles, Chile is the fourth largest country in South America after Brazil, Peru, and Ecuador. It has beautiful beaches on its northern coastline plus glaciers, fjords, and mountains to Antarctica to the south.

Chile is one of the safest countries in the region and one of the best places to visit in South America. The country has an excellent infrastructure; it is easy to get around by plane, bus, boat, train, or car. The central part of Chile (Santiago) can get quite hot and humid while the northern desert becomes freezing at night.

Looking for adventure? Try climbing the Cerro San Lorenzo, which is a challenging day hike to the top of an extinct volcano. Or maybe you want to do some horseback riding? Chile has many excellent places for this. Adventure travelers can also check out Chacabuco Valley in Aconcagua Provincial Park and visit the town of San Alfonso del Mar which is a beach resort that has the world’s largest man-made lagoon.

There’s still a lot of places to visit in this big country, but for now, we just want to give you a taste of what it has to offer!
